"Queen of the Gaslamp" Talks San Diego Nightlife, Fat Tuesday Celebrations

February 2, 2016 - by Molly Sinclair

Renaissance woman Sin Bosier has been a driving force behind downtown San Diego's thriving nightlife scene for the past 15 years.

Dubbed "Queen of the Gaslamp" and nicknamed "SIN Diego", SIN has been an event and marketing maven of downtown since launching On Broadway (now Parq Nightclub), the 35,000 sq ft nightclub responsible for putting San Diego's nightlife on the map.

She is currently the owner and CEO of event companies Gaslamp Event Management and Club VIP, and organizer of Gaslamp Mardi Gras, San Diego Fat Tuesday, Irish 4 A Day, and many more Gaslamp traditions. She also tends to have a knack for timing her events around lucky numbers (the Red Ball starts at 7:19 PM) and casually dropping witty puns (she calls her interns "Sin-terns" in this "Sinterview").

I got the chance to sit down with Sin and talk about her inspiring story, as well as next week's two separate Mardi Gras celebrations downtown - arguably her biggest project yet. Check out the interview, as well as the section "Event Info" for all your details on San Diego's Fat Tuesday on February 9th, and the Club VIP Mardi Gras ticket for Saturday, February 6th!

You've been dubbed the "Queen of the Gaslamp" by DiscoverSD, San Diego City Beat and other local media. You are widely recognized as the "event and marketing maven of San Diego". When and how did you get started in the nightlife industry downtown?

Thank you very much for the kind titles. In the US, the man responsible for kick starting my career in the hospitality industry was Michael Viscuso (SD's #1 nightlife visionary). In 2000, Viscuso converted a 35,000 square foot old bank building into the most opulent nightclub SoCal has ever witnessed. It was called OBEC - On Broadway Event Center (now Parq Nightclub).

I was responsible for staging the series of Opening Parties, building the special events infrastructure, booking one million in event sales in 6 months, copywriting and marketing the nightclub that was credited for putting San Diego's nightlife on the map.

Twelve months later, the stage was set. I left the newest and most glamorous nightclub for one of the oldest bars in the Gaslamp Quarter, called The Bitter End (now The Tipsy Crow). As the Director of Special Events & Promotions, I revamped the bar's image, re-built the events department, quadrupled the sales, helped clinch several awards including the "Best Bar" and brought sexy back to a classic joint.

Three years later, I left The Bitter End, found the swankiest Fifth Avenue office and started GEM – Gaslamp Event Management in 2005.

That's a good story. Tell me about your businesses (GEM and Club VIP) and how they have been influential in SD nightlife.

GEM and Club VIP produce events and execute marketing campaigns that market downtown San Diego, namely the Gaslamp Quarter and East Village.

Our events and campaigns brand the Gaslamp as a world class entertainment district. It's focused. It's unique. Before the GQ had an identity of its own, venues and events would describe themselves as "Vegas styled" or "Miami flavored". Instead of likening SD to any other cities, I have always insisted on using taglines such as "uniquely San Diego" or "with a SoCal twist" to establish our own brand.

Our messages have been consistent, events uniquely San Diego. The district now draws an attendance of 15-20K on the average weekend, 40-50K on holiday weekends and 7-8million visitors annually.

We strive to grow existing events, develop new ones, attract culinary and nightlife talents and keep San Diego's nightlife flourishing.

The annual Gaslamp Mardi Gras is the biggest Mardi Gras celebration on the west coast! What is the history and your involvement?

Mardi Gras in the Gaslamp started with a pick-up truck cruising down Fifth Avenue and tossing beads at passers-by 22 years ago. It was owned by the Gaslamp Quarter Association (GQA), the BID (Business Improving District) responsible for preserving and promoting the 16 and a half block district.

In 2005, I started consulting for GQA. At that time, there was only one ticket type (General Admission) to the block party. To elevate the event attendees' experience and sell more tickets to fundraise for GQA, I developed the Club VIP experience, and have been organizing that and marketing the block party since 2006.

What exactly is Club VIP and what does it offer event attendees who upgrade?

Club VIP is a collection of premier parties within the Block Party. The first year it started with 4 and now it has grown to feature more than 20 premier parties. We handpick the newest and the most unique nightclubs, bars and restaurants, and band them together to showcase the dining and nightlife downtown SD had to offer to visitors.

What can we expect for Gaslamp Mardi Gras 2016 if we've never been?

This is the first year the block party has been moved from Fat Tuesday to Saturday and the first time in history Fifth Avenue is closed on a Saturday.

If you have never been to the Gaslamp Mardi Gras block party celebration, expect a gigantic outdoor street party (rain or shine) with 30,000 people, 5 outdoor stages and the Big Easy Parade at 9pm.

With the block party moving to Saturday, what's going to take place in the Gaslamp on Fat Tuesday itself?

Staying true to the spirit of Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday"), more than 22 restaurants, bars and clubs have come together to keep the Gaslamp festive on Fat Tuesday.

GEM, Club VIP and champions of the Gaslamp Quarter spent the last decade establishing San Diego as the largest Mardi Gras destination in the West Coast. I am not giving up on Fat Tuesday just because the block party has been moved to Saturday.

Tradition is tradition. On Fat Tuesday, the real Mardi Gras enthusiasts still come out to party.

What exactly should visitors expect at San Diego Fat Tuesday (SDFT)?

There will be no street closures. Instead of a massive festival crowd, expect a more intimate but still festive affair along 5th Avenue. Tickets to SDFT include: free entry and welcome shots to the top 20 Mardi Gras parties in San Diego on Fat Tuesday, February 9, 2016.

The Day of Indulgence kicks off at 6pm with an exclusive Opening Party at the famous Coyote Ugly Saloon, where event guests will get leid with beads and enjoy a Welcome Shot, live DJ sets and bar-top dancing by the sexy Coyotes (yes, just like the movie).

This rambunctious Opening Party will set the tone for an explosive night as you hop your way through 20 Mardi Gras parties guided by the Queens of the Gaslamp Quarter.

Enjoy no cover admission to the most vibrant bars, restaurants and live music venues, multiple Mardi Gras themed cocktail samplers, Hurricane Happy Hour, tapas specials, DJs, a mechanical bull ride, live entertainment and free salsa lesson at some of the most jubilant joints along the famous Fifth Avenue before a climatic finale at two of San Diego's hottest nightclubs, Onyx Room and Sevilla Nightclub.

You have a busy week ahead. What other flagship events do you put on in San Diego?

Besides this week's Club VIP experience at Gaslamp Mardi Gras Block Party and San Diego Fat Tuesday, I also run St. Paddy's bar hop "Irish 4 a Day", Halloween's "San Diego Zombie Crawl", and the upcoming Chinese New Year Celebration "Red Ball" at the Grand Del Mar.

Is there a way to get involved in your events?

We have volunteer positions and also offer one of the most sought after internships through USD, UCSD and SDSU for credit. To apply, please submit resume to

Do you have any advice navigating the nightlife industry?

Stay professional.

Stay away from drugs.

Don't drink and drive. Uber it.
