December 30, 2015 - by Molly Sinclair

If you're searching for a conscious dance music event in SoCal that stays true to its core, look no further.

The Gem and Jam Festival Re:Creation L.A. Preparty kicks off on Friday, January 15th, and you absolutely cannot miss this one.

L.A. Preparty Details

Good news, you can experience the vibes of the desert right here in Southern California!

On Friday, January 15th at The Belasco in downtown L.A., headliners Shpongle, Ott. and Alex Grey lead the bill of psychedelically stellar artists, with Russ Liquid, Andreilien and Soulular joining them on the main stage. Gracing the Abundance stage are bass enthusiasts An- ten-nae, Mimosa, Huglife, Stylust Beats, and RYBO from Desert Hearts. The third stage, hosted by Cruz Coalition, includes Dirtybirds Worthy and Sacha Robotti, along with IAMNOBODI, divaDanielle, and DJ Loomer.

Get ready to trip out on visuals by Johnathan Singer, a Live Visual Artist who colors up sets from legends like Tipper, GD50, Shpongle, and more. Of course, the live painters will also be contributing vivid experiences that make us question ourselves, our minds, our own creative visions...

Finally, shop the unique designs of local vendors all night, giving you a taste of the desert festival right here in L.A.

The Re:Creation L.A. Preparty is going to be like a mini festival in itself! Running from 8PM to 4AM, the 8-hour, 3-stage event is certainly a gem for the price.

Tickets are fleeting fast for both the L.A. Preparty on January 15th as well as the 10th Anniversary of the 3-day Gem and Jam Festival in February, so grab them while you can!

A Little Bit About Gem and Jam Festival

If you haven't heard of Gem and Jam Festival (likely because we are stuck in a West Coast bubble), it's one of the most down-to-earth transformational desert-vibe festivals in today's hyped up dance music scene. In fact, Gem and Jam was the first transformational festival I ever attended, and it obviously thrust me into the mystical, wonderful subculture.

Located in Tucson, Arizona, Gem and Jam is a music and arts festival held in accordance with the annual Tucson Gem show. They have plenty of workshops, yoga, and activities during the day, along with the concert and after parties running all night.

I do write about a lot of events, but hear me out on this special, hidden gem of the desert. What I love about Gem and Jam is the inspiring crowd that the event brings. From the East Coast to the West, travelers gather from the "chill" scenes of San Francisco bay area, New Mexico, Colorado, the South, the North, you name it. I use the word chill because this beautiful event weeds out the glitzy-glam attitude of our L.A. parties, although I am a proud Angeleno myself. Although self expression is encouraged, it wasn't about the outfits, the Instagram-ing, or the group you came with.

After attending the festival in Arizona the past 2 years, I was delighted to discover it was about meeting new people and relaxing, enjoying yourself in the smaller, intimate festival of artists and thinkers. People will literally approach you, ask where you're from, welcome you into their circle, share gifts with you, and try to stay in contact after the show. In other words, the vibes are still there, and everyone had an interesting story to tell.

Gem and Jam Festival 2016 takes place February 12th, 13th, 14th in Tucson, AZ and is hosted by Euphonic Conceptions, Infinite Music, New Earth and Challenger. Ticket information is at the bottom of this article.
