DJ ICON Bio:
Without doubt, DJ ICON has become a permanent fixture in the U.S. dance music industry. With a career spanning more than a decade, she has captivated audiences the world over with her energetic performances, magnetic stage presence, and massive dancefloor-moving blend of Nu-School Breaks, Tech Funk and Electro House; and has become recognized as one of the leading ladies of Breakbeat.
Starting in 1996, ICON diligently rose through the ranks of the San Francisco underground at a time when female DJs and promoters were few. In just a few years, her skills had already landed her numerous residencies in San Francisco and bookings throughout the United States and far beyond. In the time since, ICON has also gained success in radio and television in addition to rocking dancefloors worldwide. She is ranked in Shejay's "Top 100 Female DJs" and was recently voted as one of San Francisco's top ten DJs in the 2008 Nitevibe "Top 10 DJ Dreamteam" Poll.
Over the last decade, ICON has performed in countless cities throughout North America and Europe and has held residencies at world famous clubs such as Limelight in New York City as well as San Francisco's 1015 Folsom, The End-Up and Temple. She has shared the stage with major dance music players such as The Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method, Paul Oakenfold, Sandra Collins, Adam Freeland, Deekline, Elite Force, Dylan Rhymes, Uberzone, General Midi, DJ Icey, Baby Anne and many more.
In addition to her reputation on the dancefloor, ICON has dominated the radio waves with residencies and guest spots on a plethora of popular long-running dance music programs such as Thump Funk on XM Satellite Radio and Boombox Mix Sessions on Sirius; Solid State on K-ROCK in NYC; IBreaks in the UK; and a myriad of shows in the San Francisco Bay Area, including House Nation on Wild 94.9 FM, Subsonic on Live 105, Zendada on Energy 92.7, and Future Breaks on KUSF. She has also made her way onto the small screen with two television series on major cable channels. In 2001, she was featured as one of twelve up-and-coming American DJs alongside DJ Craze, Reid Speed, Vinroc, and Disco D in "Disc Jockey," a 12-part documentary series that aired on Showtime-- and ShoNext--. In 2003, she was cast as the DJ on the internationally syndicated MTV-- series "The Wade Robson Project," a dance competition hosted by the self-titled super choreographer.
As an integral member Sister - the influential female DJ collective from San Francisco - ICON has endeavored to create a thriving DJ community and support network for women in the dance music industry. In 2001, ICON helped launch the successful New York City chapter of Sister. Returning to San Francisco in 2003, ICON established one of the last vinyl record stores, Reverb Records, with former business partner DJ Mystre. In an era when record stores were becoming extinct, ICON catapulted the shop to success as it became an essential source for Breakbeat followers. Reverb was an important focus point in San Francisco DJ culture until its doors closed in 2007.
So what's next for DJ ICON? A promising slate of productions and collaborations are on the way; and if the last decade has proven anything, 2008 will continue to bring big things from this exciting and versatile performer.
