After high school, Mars left Hawaii for Los Angeles with dreams of launching his career as a performer. Once there, he founded The Smeezingtons, a songwriting/production team, with Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine. The trio was responsible for crafting such hits as Flo Rida's "Right Round", Brandy's "Long Distance" and K'Naan's "Waving Flags", which was the theme song for the 2010 World Cup.

After playing a behind-the-scenes role, Mars burst onto the charts with "Nothin' on You", "Grenade" and Travie McCoy's "Billionaire" and hasn't looked back since.
