Vaughn Wooster, aka DJ Von was born and raised in San Francisco. His father Tim owned an eyeglass shop next door to a record store owned by a man with poor vision. So thanks to the barter system, Vaughns extensive record collection started at the ripe age of about 5 years old.
In 1984, after seeing Herbie Hancock perform Rockit live at the Grammy's, Vaughn cut one of his mom's dish rags in the shape of a circle, poked a hole in the middle and placed it on the platter of his playskool record player so he could scratch his Michael Jackson 45s with ease.
In 1990 he got his first Technics SL1200 professional turntable, but since he could not afford a second one, he would use one to the best of his ability, which meant a lot of scratching and turntable tricks. He djed local house parties and all of his own high school dances using one generic belt-drive turntable and one 1200 to make money so he could buy another. He also helped out a local DJ crew called Spinning Sensations, started by DJ Ajax (Ultrasounz records/ Energy 92.7) playing mostly school dances and weddings. By about 1993 he was able to save up enough money for a second 1200, and was off and running, or rather, spinning. This was also his first year of college, where he took audio production and radio broadcast classes.
Von passed out flyers for nightclubs he was too young to get into so as payment the managers would let him hang out in the dj booth all night, which was perfect since that's where he wanted to be. He scored a job running lighting boards for a few of the biggest clubs in San Francisco at the time, which was major considering he still was not old enough to attend these venues. He always brought his records to work, and it wasn't long before he got on the decks playing hip-hop as dj Dejavoo.
Due to the demise of hip-hop in the late 90s, Vaughn made a name for himself as a house DJ, which is when he simplified his name to Von, but when the dot com bubble burst shortly after the turn of the millenium, the support for the house scene faded. Von continued to play house, but the crowds dissapeared. It was a frustrating time, but it helped him realize that as a dj, his job was not as simple as just having a good music selection and the skills to play it right. He realized that his duties included paying attention to and communicating with his crowd. Knowing what they want to hear, and playing it at the right time.
Currently, Vaughn combines his extensive music library with his skills and perception to lay the soundtrack for a variety of events all over the map*. From shopping at the Puma store, to a make-over at MAC cosmetics, then dinner at Levende, followed by dancing at the Holy Cow, you can catch him spinning at these venues, among others, on a regular basis. He is also back in school for audio production, and has a few tracks available for download*, and some mix cds available for purchase**. His plans for the future include learning post-production, and doing the soundtracks for a few of your favorite movies that are yet to be released.
