DJ Kray-Z-K, born Kris Mullins, was born in Denver, Colorado in 1985. As a child he moved to Detroit to spend only a few years before he was back out towards the west coast. In 1987, he moved again to Pasadena, California before moving again only 3 years later. Once moving to Lancaster, California in 1990, not only were broken friendships becoming a problem, but also hanging out with bad influences was becoming a bigger problem. After 6 years of living in a area getting worse by the day, Kris was brought up in a life of crime, drugs, and bad activities. Despite the crime and drugs, parents also surrounded him with a taste for good music. Kray-Z-K said, “I had a mother who listened to groups like Fleetwood Mac, Sting, and Rod Stewart and a Father who listened Van Halen, Tom Petty, and Jefferson Airplane. I loved it, all of it. I loved my dads taste more than anything. Something about the guitar riffs, I just wanted to blend them together.” It wasn’t for long before he got a hold of an Ace of Base tape from a friend and couldn’t help but fall in love with the beat.

After running into serious trouble with the law at only 12 years old, Kris moved again to the opposite side of town. This is when he purchased his first CD, Ginuwine The Bachelor from a good friend who would pass from a car accident only 8 years later. He was hooked. A few days after buying his first CD, he bought 2 portable CD players and simple mixer from Best Buy. After many weeks and many attempts at beat matching, he purchased a professional CD player with pitch control. Only a month after the move in 1999, his father passed from cancer just before his grade school graduation. “From there I lost it. I was already a class clown for owning CDs like C&C Music Factory, 98 Degrees, and Backstreet Boys. I got picked on everyday for playing music and not sports, and then I lose my father. I didn’t care anymore. All I would do is play music and do drugs.” Over the next year, Kris became obsessed with music, playing music at friends parties instead of celebrating the event. More parties meant more audio equipment.

At the age of 15, with a bedroom full of speakers, amps, CD players, and turntables, Kris met DJ Craig-E-C, resident DJ at Klub Kiss down the street. From there he quickly developed the skill required to perform live. After a year deejaying at Klub Kiss with Craig-E-C and deejaying ritually every day in his bedroom, Kris, having well earned the name of DJ Kray-Z-K, landed a guest spot at Hollywood’s famous Club Avalon, known then as Club Kiis, alongside DJ Craig-E-C. Kray-Z-K would continue to DJ at Klub Kiss for another year until moving to San Diego where his career in deejaying would start to skyrocket. In 2003, Kray-Z-K was signed to Balliztic, performing throughout California with groups like King Spade, Afroman, and Kotton Mouth Kings. This included shows at Whisky A Go Go, Hollywood and various shows in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. In 2006, Kray-Z-K landed a residency position at Club Michaels, La Jolla and Club Altitude, San Diego. Kray-Z-K said, “I was hooked. This is when I knew I wanted to DJ for a living, deejaying 4 nights a week was not enough.”

Since then, DJ Kray-Z-K has held residencies in San Diego at Club Bondi, Jimmy-O’s Bar, Club Yogis, Club Spin, and Altitude SkyBar to name a few. Some of his largest events to date include “Official DJ for San Diego Film Festival” 3 years consecutively, 1 of 2 Official DJ’s for the “De La Hoya/Mayweather After Party” in Las Vegas, and 2009 Oscars After Party. He has worked with many established artists including T.I., Lil Rob, Ton-Loc, and Jamie Fox to name a few. Kray-Z-K has deejay’ed across the United States at venues including Club Firewaters & The Pool in Atlantic City, NJ, Martini Lounge in Hollywood, and Club Metropolis in Michigan to name a few. In 2009, Kray-Z-K established Energy 89.1, a San Diego State University nearby local FM Radio Station. In 2010 he launched MDC DJ Academy, a San Diego based DJ School. Looking back over the years, DJ Kray-Z-K states, “I can’t say how much deejaying has taught me on a personal and professional level. I will always DJ. I plan to take it to another level in 2010 when I start running MDC DJ Academy, which a partner and myself created. This will definitely test my skills as I teach others the art and continue to books shows both Nationally and Globally. This is my love, my passion, my dream, and most of all, what I feel I was born to do.”
